Project Year:

2010

Focus Area:

Community and Workplace Education and Outreach

Project Description:

The “Women’s Health is Nation’s Health” project team focused their efforts on those women in Ukraine who work in educational institutions – primarily teachers involved in health and deputy directors of education programs. Throughout the course of this grant, 18 trainings were conducted on breast cancer early detection for 518 women.  These women represented 35 different administrative areas, two thirds of which are rural. In addition to these trainings, at least 8,900 women in the Dnipropetrovsk oblast have been reached through an informational campaign and as trainees continue to share their new knowledge with others in their community.  This project worked in close collaboration with the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute of post-graduate education and the Chair of Valeology. This collaboration will hopefully serve as a foundation for continued work on breast cancer even now that the project is over.

Project Year:

2010

Focus Area:

Education and Outreach; Training Health Professionals

Project Description:

This Community Grant project took two different approaches to increase early detection of breast cancer in the rural areas of the Dnipropetrovsk oblast.  During the course of the project, 180 health professionals were trained in clinical breast examination (CBE). These trainings had a significant impact on screening. During the implementation period, more than 11,500 women were screened for breast cancer through CBE and over 450 through mammograms in felshar-midwife stations and the Central Raion Hospital, a lead partner in this project. Cancer is not a Verdict also trained volunteers in breast self-awareness outreach and planned a “health day” that reached an additional 69 women with breast cancer information. Although this project has ended, many different partners have taken on the project activities and will continue to disseminate information on breast cancer and engage health professionals in both training and screening.
