Training is the primary vehicle through which the Global Initiative supports its network and builds the capacity of participants to better address breast cancer needs locally and globally.
At the core of the Initiative is Course for the Cure™ (CFTC), a training curriculum that draws on Komen’s years of experience in breast cancer awareness and advocacy. The training modules cover five key topics: Community Profile, Awareness & Education, Advocacy, Fundraising, and Volunteer & Organization Development. These modules are customized to address unique local needs and establish and strengthen partnerships among a wide variety of stakeholders including NGO professionals, community-based health care workers, health educators, nursing students, private sector professionals, and breast cancer survivors.
Skills Workshops offer Course for the Cure™ graduates the opportunity to deepen their ability to address breast cancer outcomes. These workshops are designed to respond to local needs and provide the necessary tools to support emerging leaders and networks. Workshop topics include: Project Design and Management, Grant Writing, Community Education, Working with Media, Teamwork and Communication, Health Marketing, Organizational and Strategic Planning, Support Groups, Advocacy, and Network-Building.
In 2011, the Global Initiative plans to launch a new curriculum: Community Educators Program (CEP). CEP is a comprehensive and interactive program. It is designed for individuals who will be designing, managing, monitoring and evaluating breast cancer programs in their communities. The CEP focuses on expanding participants’ capacity to design and implement breast cancer programs focused on raising awareness and increasing screening behaviors. The ultimate goal of the CEP is to significantly contribute to the Global Initiative’s efforts to downstage breast cancer in its program countries.
