A group of Course for the Cure™ participants from the remote, low-resource, largely Afro-Costa Rican province of Limon used the training, support and inspiration they received from the Global Initiative to start Limon’s first non-governmental organization dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness.
- The Limon Association United against Cancer (ASOLUC) is the first NGO in the eastern region dedicated to cancer education of any kind.
- The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica has loaned out the American Corner at the Limon public library for ASOLUC to use as its office.
- Through a Komen-funded community grant, ASOLUC project leaders implemented a radio, TV and mobile media campaign on breast cancer awareness which included creation of a breast cancer hotline.

- The project resulted in ASOLUC building a volunteer base of over 60 people, some of whom staff a new service accompanying cancer patients to medical appointments.
- Even though Global Initiative grant funding has ended, ASOLUC now receives a modest monthly donation from a private company and is actively seeking funding from other sources to continue the pioneering work they have started.
