In Egypt, the Global Initiative has 3 training sites to date. The reach and impact of the program extends far beyond these sites as Community Grant Projects target new communities and expand the network.

Breast Cancer in Egypt

  • Is the most frequent cancer among women in Egypt.

  • Afflicts women at a younger age (median 49) compared to the United States or Europe (median 60-65).

  • Is diagnosed at a late stage in over half of all patients, limiting treatment options and survival prognosis.

  • Breast cancer has the highest incidence (ASR (W) 37.7) and the highest mortality (ASR (W) 20.1) among all cancers that afflict women in Egypt. The mortality rate is approximately 53%.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness in Egypt aims to create a dynamic network of dedicated activists with the skills, knowledge and vision to play a strategic role in shaping Egypt’s response to breast cancer. The Global Initiative is made possible by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with the generous support of the American people, in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Egypt joined the global network of activists and local partners implementing the Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness from 2009-2011.

The Global Initiative in Egypt is working to address a previously neglected gap in support for breast cancer survivors, psycho-social support.
