Psychosocial support for breast cancer patients, survivors, and co-survivors is a relatively new concept in Egypt and to date there are very few organizations that have attempted to organize one-on-one or group peer support programs for breast cancer survivors and their families. To address this, IIE collaborated with an expert from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) – one of the US’s leading medical schools – to design a breast cancer support services curriculum for Egypt. This training will enable participants to create and run quality support groups and peer support programs, based on international best practices in both arenas. Global Initiative participants and partners have been involved in the process of development, and the pilot and TOT trainings were successfully conducted for 18 participants in December.
