Breast Cancer in Jordan

  • Breast cancer accounts for 34.8% of all female cancers and is the most common for females.
  • Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death in women in Jordan. In 2005 breast cancer was responsible for 10.7% of all cancer related deaths.
  • Median age of diagnosis in Jordan is 51 years old.
  • In 2006, the crude incidence rate for female breast cancer was 27.6 per 100,000 females compared to 25.4 per 100,000 in 2005.
  • Highest incidence for breast cancer at 196.7 per 100,000 occurs for women ages 65-69.

Public awareness has been a primary objective for the Jordan Breast Cancer Program since its inception in 2007. Local Partners

Jordan Breast Cancer ProgramJordan Breast Cancer Program (JBCP) is a nation-wide initiative for the development and provision of comprehensive services for the early detection and screening of breast cancer for all women in Jordan. http://www.jbcp.jo JBCP was established by the Minister of Health and is governed by many key stakeholders within the health community in Jordan. This program is specifically under the leadership of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation which is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization, run by a board of trustees comprised of a dedicated group of prominent volunteers whose mission is focused on cancer care. The King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) is the only specialized cancer center in the Middle East treating both adult and pediatric patients.

King Hussein Cancer CenterAn executive board led by the King Hussein Cancer Center oversees the operations of JBCP, provides direction and ensures the implementation of its action plans. HRH Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation is the Honorary Chairperson of the National Breast Cancer Committee and the Executive Board. JBCP is governed by a National Steering Committee comprising major health stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, World Health Organization, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, Royal Medical Services, King Abdullah Hospital, USAID’s Private Sector Project for Women’s Health, Jordan University, Hashemite University and the Syndicate of Private Hospitals.
