Building Networks

Return to Mexico page

The project “Working towards Breast Health for Mexican Women,” developed a formal network of breast health organizations in Mexico City within the National Cancer Network, officially called the Breast Cancer Group (SECAMA), and is providing outreach and information to vulnerable populations.

  • Through their project, the SECAMA network met with representatives of the Natural Disaster Fund, which serves women diagnosed with breast cancer, and the Women’s Institute of Mexico City in an effort to collaborate on programs and policies to offer integral breast health care for uninsured women.
  • The network has also held “Circle of Women” activities attended by upwards of 200 women and funded by the US Embassy.  This event included breast cancer education coupled with a Zumba dance class.
  • The network created a website within the Cancer Network site, http://www.redcontraelcancer.org.mx/secama/index.html, which provides breast cancer information as well as the network’s activities, in addition to providing the network’s directory of breast health services in Mexico City.
  • The website and directory are quickly becoming a go-to resource, and the network is working to reach greater numbers of communities.
