Indigenous communities in Mexico, with a population of approximately 10.8 million, face increased barriers to healthcare and access due to poverty, their remote locations and cultural and language barriers. A community grant project conducted outreach to several rural Triqui communities in the mountainous region of Oaxaca in an effort to introduce breast health education and awareness in the area in a culturally-sensitive way.
- The community grant project worked with several rural Triqui communities of Putla, in the highlands of Oaxaca to provide breast self-awareness sessions and clinical breast exams for the women who chose to have them.
- The project leader was from the community and ensured that local community leaders were involved in the project’s implementation.
- The project included both men and women of the communities.
- This project is providing valuable information for working with indigenous populations throughout the region and understanding cultural barriers.
