Breast Cancer in Panama

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following cervical cancer.
    (Globocan 2008)
  • According to the Ministry of Health of Panama, 30 of every 100,000 Panamanian women are diagnosed with breast cancer, eight of whom will die from it.
  • There are 29 mammography machines nationwide, but the country is experiencing a lack of technicians, radiologists and oncologists

  • Advocates gain knowledge and skills to impact breast health outcomes: 69 Course for the Cure™ graduates.
  • CFTC advocates represent seven of Panama’s nine provinces.
  • More than 3,000 women screened through clinical breast exams
  • Two Community Breast Health Assessments.
  • Community Grants Awarded: Six community grant projects focusing on rural populations, community outreach and training health professionals.
  • More than 2,500 volunteers trained in breast self-awareness outreach

Panama Highlights

Working with Indigenous Communities

A 2010 Global Initiative community grant, the “Love Your Body” project provided breast cancer education to the Kuna indigenous community. Through this grant the Komen breast self-awareness video was dubbed into the Kuna language and 50  women of the community received their first mammogram. Learn More »

Working with Health Professionals

The leader of this project, a nurse in a local health center, received a 2010 Community Grant to provide breast health workshops to medical professionals in the province of Cocle. Learn More »

Outreach and Training for Underserved Areas

Funded by a 2010 Global Initiative Community Grant, a medical doctor in Veraguas province developed a project to train health professionals from 15 of the province’s rural health centers. Learn More »

Hadassah Panama Breast Cancer Walk

Hadassah Panama Breast Cancer WalkIn Panama City, the Hadassah Panama organization, in collaboration with lead partner FundAyuda and Program Manager Amalia Nicolau, organized its first race to coincide with the Komen Race for the Cure® in Israel on October 28th. Learn More »
