Kuna women in health center waiting to receive their first mammograms

A 2010 Global Initiative Community Grant, the “Love Your Body” project provided breast cancer education to the Kuna indigenous community. The project leader, a local community leader, dubbed the Komen breast self-awareness video into the Kuna language and organized women of the community to receive their first-ever mammogram.

  • The project works with the Kuna indigenous group which has limited access to resources.
  • The project provides breast health workshops for 180 community members, health care professionals, community midwives and traditional healers.
  • As an educational tool the Komen BSA interactive video was dubbed into the Kuna language.
  • 50 women 40-60 years old received free first-time mammograms.
