Romania was the only country in the Global Initiative to take on a significant advocacy project to change legislative policy for breast cancer survivors through the project, “Dignity and Respect, Rights for Breast Cancer Survivors.” This project was based in Cluj, Romania, and had a national reach. The goal of the project was to change Romania’s disability legislation to include the right for survivors who had undergone mastectomy to get free prostheses. The project team built a coalition of committed individuals, including key members of parliament, to advocate for this policy change
- If passed, this law would benefit over 60,000 women in the first year alone
- 44,500 signatures were collected during the grant period
- 33 parliamentarians agreed publicly to support the change
Unfortunately, the policy did not pass in the target legislative period, but it captured the attention of many high-level officials who have agreed to continue advocating along with the Romanian Cancer Society, the Global Initiative partner leading the project.
