Lack of awareness of breast cancer is a significant challenge faced by Romanian women. In rural areas in particular, women may not have access to medical care or breast exams through their family doctor. Global Initiative participants have tried to change this so that women have a better chance of finding breast cancer early and surviving the disease.
Community Grant Projects:
“Your Health You Decide!”, Women’s League, Constanta
- In 6 months, the Constanta team trained 13 volunteer health promoters who reached 177 women and adolescents with breast self-awareness messages.
- The Women’s League has continued to provide support to volunteers both in human resources and in sharing breast health materials that were developed or translated through the grant.
“I Prefer to Know in Time”, Agapedia Foundation, Brasov
- This group collaborated with previous grant projects to create and customize a training manual for community outreach in rural areas of Brasov. This team has replicated the successful model from Constanta to reach their rural communities.
- The project brought together many different organizations in partnership to ensure sustainable expansion of the project into new areas. This is currently proving successful in Brasov.
- 22 facilitators were trained in breast self-awareness and have successfully reached more than 620 women in Brasov and Sercaia.
