Global Initiative in Saudi Arabia
2007 – 2008
In 2007, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness launched program activities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The one-year program focused on four cities: Dammam, Jeddah, Qassim and Riyadh, working with local organizations including the lead partner: Saudi Cancer Society (SCS). Nearly 80 Saudi women participated in Course for the Cure™ workshops, establishing a Kingdom-wide network of women dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer.
Saudi Arabia Highlights
In October 2009, the King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah established the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer which is the first of its kind in the Kingdom. Under the leadership of a key Global Initiative activist, Dr. Samia Al-Moudi, KAU hosted breast cancer awareness campaigns as part of the Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness. Dr. Al-Amoudi, a breast cancer survivorand member of the Saudi Cancer Society directs the Center of Excellence. The Center’s mission is, “to spread awareness about the importance of early detection, to offer world-class services, and to ultimately provide comprehensive medical, social and psychological support to breast cancer patients and their families, while conducting broad and deep research on breast cancer.” Read more about the Center.

Local Partners
The Saudi Cancer Society is devoted to providing support services and fighting all forms of cancer. SCS is a non-profit, charitable organization supervised by the Ministry of Social Affairs. Its mission is to minimize the effects of cancer within Saudi Arabia. On October 23, 2007, SCS joined the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research to build competency in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia working in the areas of breast cancer awareness, research, training, community outreach, and women’s empowerment. Under SCS, there will be a National Cancer Prevention Committee with an executive committee focused on breast cancer. SCS also plays a primary role in helping administer and fund the Abdullatif Charitable Screening Center, the first center in the Kingdom to conduct early diagnosis of cancer containing specialized clinics to diagnose various forms of cancer in both men and women. http://saudicancer.com/en/
