Breast Cancer in Ukraine

  • Incidence per 100,000 women increased from 22.6 in 1986 to 58.1 in 2008. 16,365 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. (National Cancer Registry, 2009)
  • Morbidity rates are highest in the Odesa Region, Kharkiv Region, Dnipropetrovsk Region, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Kyiv City. (National Cancer Registry, 2007)
  • Oncological centers belong to the state; they are fully controlled and financed by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine as well as Health Departments at regional and local levels. (Community Profile—Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 2009)

“Engaging the Network” Conference in 2010 (Kyiv)

  • Advocates gain knowledge and skills to impact breast health outcomes: 111 Course for the Cure™ graduates.
  • 81 Organizations involved in the Global Initiative network.
  • 6 Community Breast Health Assessments conducted.
  • 11 Community Grant projects focusing on training health professionals and conducting community outreach.
  • More than 17,500 women screened through Clinical Breast Exams (CBE).
  • Nearly 500 health professionals trained in breast self-awareness (BSA).
  • More than 7,000 men and women reached through BSA outreach.

Ukraine Highlights

Engaging Youth

Young students in medical schools have been a strong force for breast cancer awareness in Ukraine. Through a grant project, students at Lviv Medical College have developed a creative annual breast cancer campaign week on the campus that includes flash-mob actions, outreach to students, and outreach to female family members of students.

Building a Network

Reps from Regional Organizations59 Global Initiative participants from all four program cities in Ukraine – Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Vinnytsia – convened in April for the first-ever Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Ukraine network conference on April 22 – 25, 2010. Learn More »

Innovation through Art and Media

Community grants projects in Ukraine are using the groundbreaking approach of interactive theater to spread the word about breast cancer and encourage an open discussion about behavior change and making healthy choices. Projects also are using web technology to connect key decision makers and organizations to improve communication and access to information.

Improving Clinical Breast Exams

Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) is an important screening method for breast cancer. Increasing women’s access to CBE performed by qualified health professionals has been a primary focus of Community Grant projects in Ukraine. As of 2011, more than 14,000 women have been screened for breast cancer through CBE and by health professionals engaged in Community Grant projects.
